A Little About Me

My name is Jonathan Spong, and I am the Director and Lead Decorator at Lewes Decorators.

I’ve had a long and varied career, but throughout it all, the building trades have been a constant foundation. I grew up in a family steeped in craftsmanship—my father was a carpenter, and my brothers and I were raised with a strong building ethic. Nothing was ever done unless it was done properly, and that principle has stayed with me throughout my working life.

After our family moved out of London, my brothers and I spent many years working together as property developers in Folkestone, Kent. My own background was as a multi-skilled builder, with a particular specialism in kitchen and bathroom fitting. Unfortunately, a serious spinal injury in my thirties meant I had to step back from more physically demanding work.

This led me to a successful period working as a website designer and photographer, eventually becoming one of the resident photographers at Coast magazine. However, the sedentary nature of that work aggravated my back problems, so I decided to return to a more active and hands-on profession.

I have now been working in painting, decorating, and property maintenance for over 20 years. During that time, I’ve continually refined my skills and working practices, and I’ve been fortunate to be involved in the restoration of many beautiful and significant properties in Lewes. I have also project-managed the restoration of several of the town’s most important buildings.

I take great pride in the quality of my work—this is what makes the job so rewarding. I deliver consistently high standards and work only with a trusted, close-knit network of exceptional local tradespeople from Lewes and the surrounding area.

I look forward to meeting you. Please feel free to get in touch to discuss your project—I’m always happy to talk through ideas, challenges, and concerns, and my aim is always to deliver professionalism, clarity, and an excellent finish.
